Wildlife of Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland faces the Hauraki Gulf, a marine park that concentrates seabirds — including the endemic New Zealand storm petrel — and hosts Bryde's whales year-round. Predator-free island sanctuaries a short ferry ride from the city (Tiritiri Matangi, Motutapu) hold takahē, kōkako, saddlebacks and hihi that have vanished from the mainland.

Best timeNovember – April for breeding seabirds and marine mammals in the Gulf.

Dos & don'ts

Local etiquette that keeps wildlife wild.

Do

  • Support predator-free Auckland volunteer trap lines.
  • Take Tiritiri Matangi ferry for tīeke and takahē.
  • Keep distance — use zoom or binoculars, never bait animals closer.
  • Stay on marked trails to avoid trampling nests, burrows and plants.

Don't

  • Don't take dogs to kiwi zones — one dog can kill a whole population.
  • Don't wear boots in the bush without cleaning for kauri dieback.
  • Never feed wildlife — human food changes behaviour and shortens lives.
  • Don't share exact locations of nests, dens or rare species online.
