How do you identify a spider?

Start with body shape and web (or lack of one). Round bodies on messy indoor webs suggest widows or house spiders. Compact bodies with four forward-facing eyes are jumpers. Big hairy ground-dwellers with no web are wolf spiders — not tarantulas or recluses.
