Field notes
Bold jumpers (Phidippus audax) are the #1 answer — small (12mm), fuzzy, black with a single white or orange triangular spot on the back. They jump when disturbed but do not spin webs. False widows (Steatoda) live in messy cobwebs indoors and have paler cream spots on a rounder body — bites are mild.
