How do you tell a cottonmouth from a water snake?

Head shape and swimming style. Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus) hold the head clearly up and swim with the whole body riding on the surface. Water snakes (Nerodia) swim with just the head above water and their body submerged. Pupils are elliptical in cottonmouths, round in water snakes.
